Connecting ePortfolios to Learning:

A Position Statement

According to Trent Batson, by definition, an ePortfolio is about deep learning. As a matter of fact, I would argue that an online gallery of work that is not connected to learning could not be deemed an “ePortfolio” because an ePortfolio is more than a digital collection of work. An ePortfolio is a site of learning because in the act of creating a true ePortfolio, students are required to look at their entire educational experience, inside and outside the classroom, and select certain works to showcase in order to create an argument about how their education has shaped them. Therefore, this position statement will show how ePortfolios, if not connected to learning, lose their value, and how, in contrast, when learning is the purpose and focus of such a website, the online curation of experiences creates a space for deep learning and synthesis within higher education.
